"Everyone is going somewhere, doing something, having fun — and I'm just at home." Social media have created a constant showcase of other people's best moments. FOMO is a normal reaction to an abnormal information environment.

1. What FOMO Is

Fear of missing out — anxiety that others are having better experiences and you are missing something important. The term was introduced by Dan Herman in 1996, but FOMO became widespread with the arrival of social media.

2. The Psychology of FOMO

  • Linked to the basic need for belonging and social inclusion
  • Amplified by low self-esteem
  • Social media create ideal conditions: constant stream of others' "best moments"
  • FOMO → more time on social media → more FOMO (loop)

3. JOMO as the Antidote

JOMO — joy of missing out — the conscious choice not to participate in something in order to be present in the moment. Not "I should be there" — but "I am consciously here." This requires practice and revaluing priorities.
