In traditional society, identity was determined by birth: family, religion, profession, place. Today all of this is a choice. And that is simultaneously liberation and a burden.
Barry Schwartz in "The Paradox of Choice" showed: more options → more anxiety and less satisfaction. Identity requires choice — deciding who NOT to be in order to become someone. This demands giving up endless "other options."
