Digital Communication: What Is Missing From Messaging and Video Calls

We message more than ever — but often feel more lonely. What is lost when communication moves to the digital format.

🌿psybot.app·June 22, 2026·1 min read

93% of communication is nonverbal (Mehrabian). Intonation, facial expressions, gestures, physical contact. Text messages convey 7% of this. We lose 93% of information — and call it "communication."

1. What Is Lost in Digital Communication

  • Physical contact (a hug, a handshake)
  • Intonations and pauses — often carry more meaning than words
  • Synchronicity — a live conversation happens in real time
  • "Accidental" moments — that create closeness
  • Nonverbal empathy (seeing what a person is experiencing)

2. Why Digital Communication Is "Not Enough"

  • Loneliness grows despite growing communication — "the connection paradox"
  • Messaging requires effort but does not satisfy the way a live meeting does
  • Emojis are a weak substitute for facial expressions

3. Practice: Balance

  • At least one in-person meeting per week with important people
  • Voice messages instead of text (more aliveness)
  • Video calls for significant conversations
  • Messaging — for coordination, not for closeness
