Acceleration: How to Live in a World That Keeps Speeding Up

Hartmut Rosa described modernity as "social acceleration." The world speeds up — and the psyche can't keep pace. Why and what to do about it.

We live in an era where the means of acceleration have multiplied — but life satisfaction does not grow proportionally. Hartmut Rosa called this the "paradox of acceleration."

1. Social Acceleration According to Rosa

Three levels of acceleration:
1. Technological (transport, communication)
2. Social (changing roles, professions, relationships)
3. The pace of life (a time shortage despite "saving" time)

2. Psychological Consequences

  • Chronic feeling of "not keeping up"
  • Superficiality: no time for depth
  • Anxiety about wasted time ("what did I accomplish?")
  • Loss of meaning in endless running

3. Resonance as the Answer

  • Presence practices (meditation, nature, art)
  • Protecting time for the slow
  • Depth over breadth
  • Accept: it is impossible to do everything — choice is inevitable
