Assertiveness Training in CBT: How to Learn to Say No and Stand Up for Yourself

CBT includes a specific component — assertiveness training. Role-play, the broken record technique, I-statements, and other tools for those who struggle to say no.

Do you know people who can never say "no" — and suffer for it? Or those who want to ask for help but stay silent? Assertiveness training is exactly for them.

1. What Assertiveness Training in CBT Is

A structured CBT module aimed at developing confident, direct, and respectful communication skills. It includes both cognitive and behavioral components.

2. Key Techniques

  • I-statements: "When you [action], I feel [emotion], because [reason]. What I need is [need]." Instead of "You never listen!" → "When I'm talking and you look at your phone, I feel unimportant. I need your attention."
  • Broken record: calm repetition of your position without getting drawn into argument
  • Fogging: acknowledging criticism without being obliged to agree ("You may be right")
  • Role-play: practicing difficult situations with a therapist or partner
  • Behavioral experiments: small tasks (asking for a discount, returning an item, saying no to a colleague)

3. Working With Beliefs

Non-assertiveness is often held in place by beliefs: "If I refuse, I won't be loved," "My needs don't matter," "Conflict is catastrophic." CBT works with these beliefs through cognitive restructuring.
