Male Rage: Where It Comes From and How to Work With It

Anger is often the only emotion men are "permitted" to feel. It frequently covers fear, shame, or pain. How to understand your anger and stop letting it destroy your life.

🌿psybot.app·June 22, 2026·1 min read

"Men are supposed to be angry." Of the full emotional spectrum, anger is the only one traditional masculinity "approves." This creates a problem: anger becomes a container for everything else.

1. What Lies Beneath the Anger

Anger is a secondary emotion. Beneath it often: fear, shame, pain, disappointment, helplessness. Working with rage begins with the question: "What do I feel just before I get angry?"

2. Forms of Male Anger

  • Explosive: anger outbursts, shouting, destroying objects
  • Passive: silence, sabotage, sarcasm
  • Displaced: anger at a "safe" target (spouse, children) instead of the source
  • Somatic: muscle tension, pain, elevated blood pressure

3. How to Work With Anger

  • Pause: between trigger and reaction — 10 seconds
  • Physical activity as a regular discharge channel
  • Name the emotion beneath the anger
  • CBT: working with cognitions ("they're doing this on purpose")
  • Therapy — for chronic aggression
