"They don't hit me — so it can't be abuse." This is one of the most dangerous misconceptions. Physical violence is only one type. The others can be equally destructive.
1. Types of Abuse
Physical violence: hitting, pushing, restraining freedom of movement.
Emotional/psychological abuse: humiliation, devaluation, gaslighting, isolation, intimidation, guilt manipulation, threats.
Economic abuse: financial control, forbidding work, creating dependency.
Sexual abuse: any sexual act without consent, including in marriage.
Digital abuse: surveillance via phone, controlling correspondence, sharing private material without consent.
2. Signs of an Abusive Relationship
- You are afraid of your partner's reaction
- You constantly walk on eggshells
- You have been isolated from loved ones
- Your partner controls money, phone, or movements
- You feel guilty for their behavior
3. Safe Exit
Plan your exit when the partner is absent. Keep important documents safe. Contact a crisis center for domestic violence survivors. Tell a trusted person.
