"They don't hit me — so it can't be abuse." This is one of the most dangerous misconceptions. Physical violence is only one type. The others can be equally destructive.

1. Types of Abuse

Physical violence: hitting, pushing, restraining freedom of movement.

Emotional/psychological abuse: humiliation, devaluation, gaslighting, isolation, intimidation, guilt manipulation, threats.

Economic abuse: financial control, forbidding work, creating dependency.

Sexual abuse: any sexual act without consent, including in marriage.

Digital abuse: surveillance via phone, controlling correspondence, sharing private material without consent.

2. Signs of an Abusive Relationship

  • You are afraid of your partner's reaction
  • You constantly walk on eggshells
  • You have been isolated from loved ones
  • Your partner controls money, phone, or movements
  • You feel guilty for their behavior

3. Safe Exit

Plan your exit when the partner is absent. Keep important documents safe. Contact a crisis center for domestic violence survivors. Tell a trusted person.
